My 8 year old gelding has been out to pasture for a while with his herd of 15 and today I noticed this huge swelling on his right chest. It's tender and seems a bit warm to the touch.

Does it look like possible/probable case of pigeon fever? (I live in Kansas.)Dixon's chestDixon's chest 2

I am no Vet, but I'd say there is a good chance it could be. Just finished reading an article on P. Fever in the Horse Journal. Call your vet who can make a decision based on blood work. Is it hot to the touch? Painful?

Sorry, you already answered my questions. Duh.
Is it hard along with being warm and painful?

Unless you want to wait for Dr. O or someone else's opinion, I'd put in a call to your vet, describe it to him/her over the phone and see where it goes from there.

Meantime, wishing you luck.

Thank you for your input. I'm going to call my vet on Monday. But I'm just trying to educate myself on how to identify the various (never ending!!!) stuff that happens to my gosh darn horses. : )

yup .. you got PF ... what i would do now is shave it, so when it decides to blow it will be easier to keep clean .. then start hot compressing, that will take some of the pain out and bring it to a head .. its nasty stuff.. separate him from the herd.. and try to keep the puss once it opens contained .. once open you will have to flush it out daily twice would be good ..
Have fun NOT .. .sorry been thru this a lot of times ..

On the first day God created horses, on the second day he painted them with spots..

Hello PRUs,
It is a possible PF but trauma resulting in a hematoma or seroma might also look like this. Let us know what the vet finds and remember if this is pigeon fever the puss needs to be disposed of carefully, see the article for more on this.

The vet was here yesterday, and yes, it's pigeon fever. He said that he had rarely had a case of it, and because of our extremely dry summer, he's had 5 cases in the last week. He took the pus with him in a plastic bag and I'm flushing it twice a day with the mixture he left me. I have my gelding isolated as much as my place allows me and praying for no more cases!
