Dr O,
I have recently had someone state they won't microchip their animals because "microchips cause cancer".
I was surprised at this statement, mostly because were this the case, I would expect something to be noticed in Europe where tens of thousands of horses have been microchipped since 2005.
I have done a search of pubmed and Ivis and found nothing to support this statement, (although I did find warnings about being sure to follow implantation protocols for cats).
Have you seen any research on adverse effects/cancer resulting from microchipping horses?

CherylA, I sure hope not because the The United States Equestrian Federation is requiring it for all newly registered horses with the FEI

Hi Linda,
I have been through the research databases I can find and can't find anything to substantiate such a statement. But it is possible I am not searching correctly so I am interested to hear what Dr O. has to say.

Hi Cheryl,
We have microchiped hundreds of animals and not had a single problem. I have not seen any such research to suggest cancer is a complication.

Dr O - That is the conclusion that I have drawn as well... but I wanted to check with an independent party to confirm!

I have since found research that specifically has looked for adverse effects related to microchipping in various species with large N, and nothing has been found.

There are, however, some papers of the "ooooh! lookie this!" type: single instances where fibrosarcomas have formed around a microchip. One in a rat, one in a kind of vole, one in a dog, one in a cat.

Once again, thank-you.
Cheryl
