Hello. I am new to the group, and so glad I found this site. I have a question about my high-strung 8-year old gelding. He was running with his buddy yesterday, and I think he pulled or injured something. He started favoring his front left leg, and it would drag when he walked. I just recently lost my mare this month, and I'm a little paranoid. I had some banamine and steroids left over from my deceased horse, and called the vet. He had me give him banamine and steroids. This morning he was doing much better, and only slightly limping. I gave him more banamine and steroids. This evening he seems to be okay, but still walking slow, so I'm still worried. However, I really don't want to take him to the vet unless totally necessary. Part of me says he's recovering fine; the other part says take him in. Any suggestions?

Welcome Melody, We always recommend that when you don't know what is going on you should call your vet. I would note that I would not use the steroid and bute together as it can potentiate gastric ulcers. A NSAID like bute alone would be better for a traumatic injury. The article associated with this discussion area does give you some pointers until the vet gets out. DrO
