By an unfortunate string of events we came out this morning to find 20 large broccoli plants missing and our two horses in the garden. No idea which one, or both, ate the broccoli. It was only in the leaf stage (no fruit yet) but the plants were a least a foot and a half in diameter and there were about 20 of them. All of them had been eaten down to the stump at ground level.
The horses seemed fine and were happily grazing away in the front yard. My husband immediately called the vet and was told to put them in the dry lot round pen with lots of water, feed them each up to a gallon of bran mash, and to keep them moving. They "seem" to be okay but is it just a matter of time? How long would it take for a gas colic to show up from eating that much broccoli? What else should I watch for? The vet didn't recommend using mineral oil at this time since there are no 'signs' of colic yet......just trying to avoid it. Please help! Even if just to talk me through this.........these guys are my babies!!!

Hello DCCR,
I don't think you are likely to experience a problem from this is a pretty fibrous plant that I do not think will ferment rapidly. If you are going to have problems it should start in the first 48 hours.
