Discussion on Treating Dermatophilosis with SMZ's

I am treating a itchy, bumpy skin problem as Dermatophilosis. It has some, but not all, characteristics of this infection. (I originally posted about this problem in the Itching Skin/Bumps Forum.) My primary vet lives far away and has not seen the horse in person; only photos. A local vet has seen the horse and taken some scurf samples to send away for cytology/culture but results are not back yet. This vet only recommended bathing every other day with Nolvasan scrub.

My long time primary vet disagrees with the frequent bathing. He says to just bathe once and keep the horse dry. He recommended SMZ's for 7 days. I really do not like to give antibiotics, but I agreed and have now given 4 doses.

My question is: How many doses of SMZ's would have to be given before I see an improvement and am able to ascertain that this treatment is working? I do realize that I need to complete the full course, even when symptoms disappear.

Another question is: On this site I read that if one does nothing for Dermatophilosis, it will eventually clear up on its' own. What then happens to the scabs? Do they just dry up and fall off? I felt that the condition was not improving, and actually spreading which I why I opted to do the SMZ's.

Picking off the scabs in an impossible feat when there are hundreds of little ones all over the body.

What about the bumps that do not yet have scabs? Will scabs eventually form on them? Are the formation of scabs the end of result of the infection or the beginning?

Hello Sachet,
I have never used TMP/SMZ for dermatophilus so do not know what to expect. For our recommendations see the article associated with this discussion topic.
