How often should a horse pee? I have a 23 yo Trekhner gelding, the weather has turned bad with snow and the horses have been in the barn overnight the last 2 nights. They came in Sunday evening around 5pm and were in until Monday around noon. Both of the other horses peed so much that I had to strip the shavings from the stalls. My guy did not pee at all. They went out Monday at noon until about 5pm. Came back into the barn and stayed in overnight. Again, no pee in the stall this morning. Usually he waits until he gets outside to pee anyway. But he did not pee right away when he went out this morning. Obviously can't watch him all day. He is acting normally otherwise. I added gatorade to his automatic waterer this morning and saw him drink quite a bit. So, should I be concerned?

Hello Kathy, You probably don't have anything to worry about. There are very few diseases that cause a horse to urinate less yet the horse still remain healthy. I guess the one concern should be how much water does he drink in a day and somewhat related is if he getting enough salt in his diet. Do you have a feeling for either of these? If not can you measure this is some quantitative way? Are the stools dry? DrO
