Could someone please help me...my 14 yr. old horse developed lameness in foot...I have been treating with soaks and poultice and this AM abscesses broke out..in sole, coronary band and fetlock...I do not know what to do next, I cannot afford another vet call. Should I give him penicillin injections? I have oral bactrim...any info would be greatly appreciated! Right now, he is in a dry bandage, remaining in thick cushy stall floor. Thanks

Welcome Nancy,
For general but in-depth information on treating foot abscesses and gravels you should check out HorseAdvice.com » Diseases of Horses » Lameness » Diseases of the Hoof » Hoof Abscesses, Bruises, and Gravels. As to the use of Bactrim we have an article on this at HorseAdvice.com » Treatments and Medications for Horses » Antibiotics and Antimicrobials » Trimethoprim -Sulfa.

It is not usual for a foot abscess to surface at the fetlock and suggests a more serious disease than a simple foot abscess. You must seek professional help with this Nancy. If you have a regular veterinarian and explain the circumstances I am sure some sort of payment plan can be worked out.
