I have a 16yr Clydesdale mare and I have be dealing with shoe boils for years but luckily none ever ruptured until now. I had to quarantine the mare when we moved over to Germany and she arrived with a large boil and no boots. She has a golf ball size open wound in a baseball size sac. I clean the wound twice a day with soap and water and try to keep the flies away. The vet has her on 1mg Bute twice a day. This is about a week now and I am still looking for shoe boil boots-no one has heard of them here. I have been putting travel boots on the front legs when she is in the stall in the meantime. She is not lame. How much can I work her? Is walking and trotting for 40 mins okay

Welcome Marilyn,
I see no contraindication of work as long as this is not resulting in trauma to the area but this should be decided finally by the vet examining your horse.

Many years ago, I had a mare with a shoe boil ( following a devastating heel injury ). We used a canvas tube sand-filled weight that buckled around the pastern. It was an article used as a weight for gaited horse training. I don't know if they still use those kind of things on gaited horses for training, but you could try looking in that direction. It was a wonderful pad for my mare and aided greatly in the healing of her shoe boil. It was easy to clean, easy to wear, and it protected her "boil" area perfectly.

Thanks for your suggestions. I have been using the shoe boil boot like Big D's for years on my mare. When she developed the first boil the vet told me it was caused by lying on her shoes. She has been barefoot for years now but she still gets the boils every summer when the flies get heavy. The boils develop in one day. The boils were never a problem until one ruptured. Now I am dealing with an open wound that is impossible to bandage and flies! Thanks Dr. O for your care articles. I am using the water hosing and ointments as you suggest. In one week, i see alot of improvement and less pain. The problem I am having is finding the doughnuts here in Germany.

You should contact Big D's and see if they can ship Internationally. Also, You might want to try vet wrap covered by Elastoplast both to keep it clean and to protect it. Big D's has both.
