One of our offspring jumped a high fence (maybe 4.5 - 5') to get into the pasture with a pony mare. They were found together this morning. Both are a little stiff and sore. The colt has a swelling on the front of his cannon bone on a rear leg. We think he either hit the fence with his leg while jumping or was kicked by the mare (he was observed to have mounted her....) :-( Anyway they were apart at 8:30 last night, but were found together at about 6:30 this morning. Quickly separated. The colt does not appear to be lame, just a little stiff in the topline and rear. He qualified for the regional DSHIH championships which are next weekend, so we a hoping for a quick recovery. He has been given bute, hyDrOtherapy & ice packs for the leg. Any other suggestions? I will post a picture. There is no swelling in the tendon or rear of the leg. There are not any abrasions or cuts. I will post re: what to do about the mare under a repro heading.
Geezzzz!

Hello Judy,
You will probably gain control over the swelling quicker with pressure bandaging, best with a cold poultice. For more see HorseAdvice.com » Diseases of Horses » First Aid » Pressure Wraps, Poultices, Cold and Heat Therapy for Swelling in Horse Legs.
