Hi Dr. O, it's been awhile! I have a two year old gelding who was vaccinated with strangles IN vaccination and booster last April. He is scheduled to go into training Monday, so on the 6th of Jan. I had him boosted. Today I found a submandibular abscess. The skin and hair easily came off and it's bloody but no pus even with hot packing. No fever (98.4, no cough, no runny nose. I've not had strangles on this property, but a mare I have at home now was at a training barn a year ago in October when strangles went through the barn. She was one of the few that didn't get sick. We didn't vaccinate her of course, but since the disease kept recurring and she was one of the few healthy, she was tested on suspicion of being a carrier. Tested negative. Other than that, this colt has had no exposure. Could the abscess be related to the IN Vaccine? I won't be sending him to training on Monday in any case, but am at a quandary what to do. Another colt had his first IN vaccine at the same time as this one had a booster. They are together and I haven't seen any symptoms in the other one. He's due for a booster, so also don't know what to do about that.

Hello Julie, Yes it is possible that this is a reaction to the live IN vaccine. The immune system was just a little too active in this case. Treat the abscess locally and once healing it will be OK to go on to the trainer. DrO

Thanks Dr. O! He's still afebrile and no other issues. I'll continue to hot pack and get him to the trainer's once it heals.
