I have a 5 year old warmblood mare. During exercise she will become very anxious and sweaty and then she will become stiff and unable to move well. She will stop and pee. The urine from beginning to end is bright red. Once she has pee'd she is perfectly fine, and moves just like before. In the following days when I lunge her there is no stiffness. This has happened on four occurrences. It seems to be on the third to fourth ride in a row. She does not run a fever and only the next pee in the stall will have blood, the rest are clear. She has been ultrasounded and flushed. There seems to be no stone or structural abnormalities. The urine has been cultured and nothing shows. There is an unusual amount of sediment in her bladder at times and a couple of days ago she pee'd in the stall and there was about half cup of sediment in it. There is no pain when urinating. She is otherwise healthy and happy. She is in good weight and is excellent to ride with no signs of discomfort except on the times that she has blood in the urine.

Did you consider tying up synDrOme? Our appaloosa mare have a history of tying up during exercise and then bloody urine. She is on no sugar diet and corn oil and has to be exercise regular(every day) so far no problem. Just a thought.

Welcome Ashley,
What are the results of urinalysis and blood chemistries and a complete blood differential. Ideally these should be run just following one of these episodes.

The last horse I saw with a similar history did not have blood but a heavy calcium carbonate sediment that was orangy-red in color.

I was just at UC Davis and there was a horse that was being treated for a kidney stone and this was the symptom. Blood in urine after exercise.

Now he was a gelding. I don't know if the girls are built differently as it relates to a kidney stone?

No, girls with respect to a kidney stone would be the same.
