My farrier has never commented on my horse's feet, but I was wondering if this image indicated anything. There seem to be various horizontal lines on all his feet, on the hind feet there is one black hoof: the lines are visible and each of the feet the lines are about 1"+ down from the coronary band. Could this be a sign on sub clinical laminitis? He used to point with his LF but has gradually (since July last year) been standing more squarely.

Hello ZBGirl,
It looks to me that the coronet that forms the horn has a few pigment forming cells that turn on and off intermittently. Why they would do it I don't know. Another possibility might be intermittent bruising when the horn is formed but I don't think so. Lastly some sort of external staining is occurring on the surface as the horn is formed.
