Dr O,

a friend at the place where i board was told today by her farrier that her horse has an abcess on his frog on one hoof and a bruised hoof on the other side. they think this is possibly due to the fact that he digs in his stall and paces a great deal. the farrier told m friend that she should tie her horse up next to his food and water so that he cannot pace anymore. My question is that is there any other method to stop this? his method sounds a little mean.

Hi Jenniffer,

If he has a bruise, that by itself could take a long time to grow out and you can keep the horse tied up in the stall for that long.

My horse has bruising and the key is to get their soles off the ground. Probably the same for the abcess.

Does the horse have shoes on? If he doesn't they might want to get some shoes on as a preventative measure or until the foot heals.

Hope that helps some.

Hello Jennifer,
Recently it was published that a large mirror placed in a stall greatly reduced pacing and other stall vices. Of course you cannot use a regular mirror because of breaking and a highly polished sheet of metal is recommended. There is a company making these but I don't remember the name, but I bet you can find it through Google.
