Just wondered if anyone has any advice on the following. My horse had a small swelling on the outside of her nearside fore below the knee in the groove between the cannon bone and the tendon (suspensory ligament?)I had not really paid much attention to it it had possibly been there for 3 weeks. After a cross country event the swelling has increased now on the inside of the leg it is quite solid.. like a gel pad. It is not hot nor is my horse lame. There is no pain response on palpitation. I have not ridden her since and she has now had 3 sachets of Danalon split over two feeds (evening and morning).. the swelling has not changed. I have been cooling the leg (with ice bandage). The leg is being scanned on Monday but does anyone have any insight as to what this could be or had a similar 'injury'? The vet was understandably unsure and gave me the Danalon to give to Riverdance until Monday. Thanks in advance

Hello Rosie,
The area you describe has a number of structures that can swell as you can see in the diagrams in the article associated with this area. Your description does not help decrease the choices. Possibly by going through the article and then with the diagrams you may be able to narrow the choices. Let us know what the vet finds.

Hi DrO thanks for replying, the swelling is between where the diagrams indicate splints (yellow dots) and the volar pouches of the fetlock joints (blue dots. The article on splints seems closest to what I am seeing but not quite. The Danalon may have had moderate effect over the weekend but the swelling is still there. I will let you know what the vet says.
Thanks again for your time.

The scan showed that she has injured her check ligament (accessory ligament of deep digital flexor tendon)The vet said that with the quality of the scanner they could not exactly tell how large the injury is. I cannot box rest Riverdance because she box walks. I have put a magnetic boot on her for short periods of time (if it doesn't help I dont think it will do harm) but any other advice on what I can do would be greatly appreciated.. I know its probably just a case of time but I would like to feel like I m doing something to expedite the healing. Thanks again. Rosie
