My 19 year old paint mare has some bumpy nodules on her right hind. These are about hive or pea size, very hard and some are scabby. This started with her hair looking slightly rubbed the wrong way in areas about 6 inch diameter circles (2 or 3 areas). Then they were slightly swollen, now they are hard bumpy nodules. They are only on her right side upper leg/butt to her upper midline. Now they are becoming crusty and weepy. I have been blanketing her with a Kool Coat and using fly spray as well as skin so soft (for the midgets) in the evening on her chest and ventral midline. She has no bites/bumps anywhere else except these on her hip/butt. Her coat everywhere else is soft and shiney. I am currently using a chlorhexidine 4% shampoo (that I asked the vet for) hopping this will help. The vet that was out at the barn looked at it and only said, this is the time of year that we see a lot of skin irritation and charged me $30.00 for a limited exam, she was also having her yearly vaccinations. This has been going on for the past few weeks. I wormed her about a week ago and now it's weepy. I have not wormed her this year due to her Stylohyoid issue, she would not allow anything to be given orally until recently, so I did not worm her as often as I usually do. She is only out with one other horse and in her own stall at night in a very controlled environment so I wasn't worried too much about the worming schedule. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Terric, Your description does not allow us to make a stab at a diagnosis however the veterinarian who examined the lesions should have some 30 dollar notion as to what is going on. I recommend you call him/her up and ask what is the cause of the skin irritation so that you can get a good idea as to what might be the most effective treatment. Let us know what they say. For more on the diagnosis of such lesions see HorseAdvice.com » Diseases of Horses » Skin Diseases, Wounds, and Swellings » Bumps / Nodules / Warts / Tumors » Overview of Bumps, Nodules, Warts & Tumors which describes common conditions that might fall within the description of the lesions you provide above.
