Hello Dr. O, I have a 6 month old pony foal that was diagnosed with pneumonia. He was previously treated with Tucoprim for respiratory infection and seemed to recover but has relapsed and now developed pneumonia. I am unable to give this colt injections by myself, so vet has put him on 5 grams Chloramphenicol 3x per day for 4-6 weeks depending on response. The article on chloramphenicol says it should be given 4x per day. Your thoughts on the 3x per day frequency my vet has prescribed? Thank you! CC

Hello CC, Chloramphenicol is questionable as a oral antibiotic in horses chiefly because of the very short half life the doses listed in the chloramphenicol article at the frequency recommended really should be considered a minimum in a situation where you are likely to have a fairly susceptible organism. Thank you Dr. O. Is there another oral antibiotic that can be used in place of chloramphenicol?

Is Exceede a viable option? I know it is injectable not oral, but I see it only has to be given a couple times.

The product Excede is a cattle product containing ceftiofur. The horse product is called Naxcel and you can read about this at HorseAdvice.com » Treatments and Medications for Horses » Antibiotics and Antimicrobials » Naxcel (Ceftiofur) and the Cephalosporins. Though I cannot say how appropriate this is for your horse it is used in equine lower respiratory infections. We have recently been discussion oral minocycline as a wide spectrum antibiotic choice, run a search above and those discussions should be easy to find. DrO
