Posted on Wednesday, Nov 19, 2014 - 3:27 am: Is ulcer on the tongue of the 12 year old horse indication that he has a stomach ulcer ? The ulcer is 2 cm in diameter. The horse his kept in an open stable , fervent access to pasture, at night hay nets are provided. Is there any treatment for the tongue ulcer ? The horse is eating well, grain and hay, no problem . I do vet the hay to soften it . Any suggestions ? Thank you, AnnaMarie. |

There are many causes of ulcers and in order to treat it properly you must determine then fix the cause. Then the ulcer can heal. Certainly trauma would be a common cause, could this be a biting problem? DrO |

Lacking vitamins/minerals ... I'll tell you when the ulcer disappears . |

Posted on Tuesday, Jul 21, 2015 - 5:17 pm: Bad news , Dr. O...The same horse (Trubador), another ulcer developed on the other side of his tongue , his right outside . I left it thinking it will clear itself out . It got much bigger, 2.5 cm diameter. After few months I called the same vet (seen the first ulcer) to come to look at it. Two vets came and did not like it , took a sample for biopsy . Result, Glossite granulomatosa eosinofilica . Not known here in Portugal . In England only few horses have it. The horse is suffering on and off diarrhoea, is lethargic , swollen muzzle full of small ulcers/sores. Now awaiting what treatment will be given . Is it a known illness in the US ? |

Posted on Monday, Aug 17, 2015 - 4:46 pm: Dr. O, sorry for the delay...translation is not easy...Fragment of tongue tissue with hyper plastic epithelium and deep erosions. A zone of intact epithelium is covered wit cornfield epithelium showing parakeratosis. The lamina propr is thickened with a layer rich in areas of infiltrations of eosinophilics .Many granulomas with necrotic centres containing fragmented eosinophils surrounded by macrophages. This pathology is a result of hypersensitivity and belongs to the group of eusinophilias . This is a multisysteic epithelial eosinophilic disease (MEED) as cuteness lesions are present on the body and includes symptoms of involvement of the gastro-digestive system ( watery diarrhoea ). |

Posted on Tuesday, Aug 18, 2015 - 6:40 pm: Hello Anna,Hypersensitivity reactions can occur anywhere and I suspect this is a type of autoimmune reaction though I cannot rule out allergic diseases. These are are typically treated with steroids and a trial and error management with alternative feedstuffs. Are you treating this and with what? DrO |

Posted on Friday, Dec 18, 2015 - 5:02 pm: Hello Dr. O. sorry about this enormous delay answering and keeping you informed...My computer was sick, I never got your last post and any other news from HA.Trubi has been given antibiotics, started to colic so we stopped. I am feeding him Pavo Natures best and Gluten free food. Adding salt, garlic powder , turmeric , fresh yeast, on and off sea weed . He got better , the ulcer moved from his right side to the middle of the tongue. It was smaller . He looked and felt better for several months. But again it started to get bigger....he is also more lethargic . It seems my feeding program is not working . I shall keep you updated . Hopefully HA will change my email address !! |
