Hi there, Noticed a bit of swelling in my horses hind leg about two weeks ago. She was sound so I rode. Came back two days later to the barn to find her leg was huge (elephant leg!). Two weeks later, infection is ruled out. Swelling goes up and down with various amounts of heat. Slightly off some days. Heat seems to be on the inside of the leg, halfway between hock and hoof. Sometimes you can see a lump there. She does have some old scares there and she could have injured that area before I bought her. It seems better in the morning after stall rest/sweat wraps then gets worse after turnout for the day (I haven't been riding). She does run around outside sometimes. Vet wants her out during the day to help with circulation to get the fluid out with sweat wraps at night. Thoughts?

Welcome Danielle, If rest makes it better and work makes it worse, it suggests a inflammatory cause that worsens with exercise. You should discuss this idea with your veterinarian. DrO

Hi DrO, Had an ultrasound done. Unfortunately there is a tear in her inferior check ligament. He said this is pretty rare. On top of this, there is additional swelling because an old injury in the same area was aggravated and caused more fluid. Vet said stall rest for 4 weeks with hand walking then slowly start back under saddle walking and working our way up to trot. Do you think she will make a full recovery?

Very unimpressed with the response time on this board.

Sandram, No one can predict if your horse will make a full recovery. Your horse has been examined by your vet and gave you a rehab program to follow, if you have followed that program, you may have gotten your own answer by now. Your horse should be showing some signs of improvement between the time you posted your recovery question and now.

I apologize sandram, somehow your last post fell through the cracks. Rtrotter is right in that we cannot speculate on your horse in particular not having a complete picture particularly with respect to the chronic problems that you allude to. What does your vet say? To learn more about ICL desmitis I recommend HorseAdvice.com » Diseases of Horses » Lameness » Diseases of the Lower Limb » Inferior Check Ligament Desmitis. It speaks to the questions you have asked. DrO
