I have a foal that was treated for pneumonia and given the all-clear from my vet a few weeks ago (lungs sounded good, bloodwork was normal.) I've heard the foal coughing off and on since then, but otherwise seems normal (no temp, good appetite etc.) Should I be concerned that the foal is still coughing? Is it normal that they would continue to cough after treatment? Thanks!!

Hello CCT,
Following a bout of pneumonia there is usually some inflammation and hyper-reactivity (bronchospasm and increased secretions) left over that takes time to resolve. Think about chest colds you have had.

As long as a animal is continuing to improve chances are good the infection itself has been resolved. There are exceptions, abscess formation of instance, that may look better then worsen again. Continued close surveillance as long as there are symptoms. A good indication in the horse of resolution is to have the fibrinogen levels return to normal.
