My horse had a suspensory injury in both hind legs, both branches of his suspensories about 5 years ago. He took 1 1/2 years but showed good healing based on ultrasound images. I stopped doing dressage and had no further problems until this spring. He hasn't been ridden all winter and the vet noticed sensitivity in one area of his LH medial branch during his spring checkup. I had an ultrasound and there appears to be damage. My question is: Can suspensory damage be caused by a one time strain such as slipping or does it require repeated stress? I'm trying to figure out how this happened when he was turned out and not being ridden. Also, I think that having trimming done at proper intervals is going to be important but my farrier will not come any sooner than 6 weeks. In the summer my horse's hoof growth is always faster and I'm concerned that 6 weeks may be too long. Anyone have experience with this? How important is this for my horse's rehab?

Hello Maureen, Yes suspensory desmitis can be a acute lameness caused by accident that results in hyperextension of the fetlock joint and overstretching of the suspensory. Then once injured the problem can be a chronic problem. A long toe and low heel will increase the stress on the suspensory. For more on this see the article associated with this discussion area. DrO
