I live in Oro Valley Az. My 5 y/o 900lb mare developed a case of uncontrolled hives in mid-January. I first tried dexamethasone 10mg/5cc with hyDrOxyzine caps starting with a dose of 250mg twice daily. I raised the amount of hyDrOxyzine to 500mg twice daily because she was not responding to lower dosage. After a week, I tried an initial dose of 40mg/5cc of the dexamethasone then gradually decreased the dex. The hives disappeared but she was very drugged and foot sore after the 12 days. Decreasing the dosage, I was able to her her to 4mg of dex daily before the hives returned full force. My vet recommended keeping off the hyDrOxyzine and keeping the dex 10mg/5cc daily alternating with 20mg/5cc daily. This is not helping. I am going to move her to Tubac next week which is higher elevation. I have ordered Platinum skin and allergy. Do you have any suggestions

Hello Cathy,
I like the idea of moving and have you given your horse a good shampoo with a hypoallergenic product to remove any skin contaminants? I find cool water can often be a temporary relief to hives. Concerning the steroid use it is important to realize it is not so much the dosage as it is the frequency that leads to complications with its use. The article on hives has a link to the article on overview of steroid use you should follow and study carefully so that you can best direct your horses treatment plan.

Thankyou Dr Oglesby. I moved her Sunday. She was bathed yesterday with a mild baby shampoo and her hives are greatly improved. She is on 10mg of dex and I would like to get her off of it. The hives are not completely gone but her vet wants to start her on a regime of prednisolone and take her off the dex.
