Posted on Saturday, Mar 26, 2016 - 8:10 pm: My mare got kicked by another mare on the inside of her forearm. About four inches above her knee. the mare that kicked her was not wearing backshoes.I think my mare may have turned into the wall when it happened. I coldwater hosed her wound which was swollen but not real deep and the next day her swelling is worse and has moved down into her knee. She is not lame hand walking her but it is very swollen. I'm cold water hosing for about 15 minutes twice a day. gave her bute on day 1 & 2 and banamine today. swelling does not seem to be going down. iam worried about her knee having swelling.I used dmso/furazone just on her knee last night and this morning after hosing. is that okay to do? What else can I do or should I be doing different to help the swelling? Should I be this concerned about the swelling that set in her knee? I can not get the vet out til Mon.morning. So any advice on what to do and things to watch for to get me through the weekend would be much appreciated! |

I wasn't overly concerned right away when it happened but the next day when all the swelling set in, that really worried me. I did give her penicillin tonight and did a poultice wrap after cleaning all the dmso off. I thought cool compression might work better? Dmso doesn't seem to be doing a lotto help. Her knee looked a little less swollen tonight but I also noticed that the swelling has moved to just below the knee now where the cannon bone and knee come together? I just don't want any infection or any other permanent damage setting in. This is a high quality mare with big future ahead of her. She will Be showing all-around in the AQHA level shows...as long as this is not detrimental to her career!! |

Traumatic injuries are often given antiinflammatories (both local and systemic) and may be put on prophylactic antibodies. Local swelling may be controlled best with pressure wraps. It is often wrong to conclude that something is not working because the condition did not get well, it may have been worse without treatment. If your vet cannot get out till Mon then at least confer with your vet over the proper dosing and administration of medications.
