Discussion on SCC on head of penis

hello, I have a healthy 21 yr old gelding whom I usually clean his sheath every 3-4 weeks as it gets dry hard crusty black gunk (very technical term) on the inside sheath wall. I noticed last fall a small bump just next to the urethral process, roughly the same size. I sent pic to my DVM and she said nothing to worry about. just a few days ago, DVM was here and I asked her to look at penis again and she immediately said it was SCC. Currently the size of the bump is about 3/8" in diameter with another tearDrOp size one on the rim of penis.
I will try to post pics. most recent ones a bit blurry..sorry.
Vet said it should be removed in hospital vs the field to be more thorough, but did not take a scraping or biopsy... What are the chances of it being Parasitic, if any? and would just like your thoughts in general as how to move forward. Many thanks in advance Dr.O

Hello Ike,
If you are regularly deworming with ivermectin products common parasites that result in granulomatous reactions is not likely. I think removal with wide margins then biopsy is a good way to move forward.

Ike, I have dealt with this on two horses. Both horses had laser surgery. The second horse had the lesions return after a month, so he went back for more laser and had cisplatin beads planted . . . Then, he went back for a few more beads. Just an option if you are exploring different methods of dealing with SCC.
