My horse has developed hardened masses at each side of his neck at the top roughly along the jugular groove starting from almost against the jaw. I first noticed approx 2 months ago. One side is larger than the other at approx 10 x 5 cm. It feels like roughly shaped cartilage externally. My vet has scanned his neck today and said they are cysts in the strap muscle and that they look black when scanned . The vet nurse described them to me as looking like bubble wrap. My vet does not know the cause and suggests biopsy or wait and see. Do you have any thoughts on the cause of these localised muscle cysts? I am in the UK and the horse has only lived in the UK .

Hello Kath,
No I don't immediately associate your description with any particular disease process and concur with your vet that the next step is a biopsy. I would love to know the results.
