Posted on Sunday, Dec 18, 2016 - 8:33 am: I have a 4 year old grey colt that is a race horse at Los Alamitos Race Course with skin diseaseAge of animal: • Age when purchased: The horse was purchased about a year ago • Age when problem started: The problem started about one month ago. • Where on the body did the problem start: The problem started on both hind quarters up and around the point of the hip, flank, buttock, croup and loin. • What did the problem look like initially: The problem looked like little round welts about 1/2 in diameter. • How has it spread: It seems to be isolated to the hind quarters, but it started on the right hind quarter and spread to the other side • What season did it start: it started around fall. • Is the problem seasonal or year round: If seasonal, what season: I'm not sure • Does the horse itch: Where: Does not itch • Do any animals or people in contact with this horse have similar skin problems: No • Is fly control used: Fly control is used in the summertime I've seen maintenance use something that is thrown down in the straw to control the population of the fly's a type of insect that eats fly eggs not sure. • Do any relatives of this horse have similar skin problems: Unknown • List any medications (topical, oral, injected) or chemicals used on the horse before the problem developed: Fly sprays • List any medications used after the problem developed: Nothing, just deluded bleach water that seemed to help but now there are patches of round skin spots • Where any medications helpful: Deluded bleach water seemed helpful still waiting for the hair to grow back but stopped using it until then • Where any medications harmful: Not that I know of • Describe the horse's environment and bedding: The horse just got off straw and is now on good quality shavings. This racetrack took all stalls off straw because of contract problems with the contractor that removes used straw. • What is the animal fed: Oats, race ready sweet feed, beet pulp, flax seed, red cell, and carrots mixed with warm water in the late afternoon • Any additional information you feel relevant working on pastern dermatitis or early stage cracked heel on left front pastern. the horse is in training as well. any advice would be appreciated as to a treatment |

Your history helps rule out some causes but does not rule in a single disease. We have an article on this condition that explains the disease, causes, and without a diagnosis some general treatments. You will find it at HorseAdvice.com » Diseases of Horses » Skin Diseases, Wounds, and Swellings » Bumps / Nodules / Warts / Tumors » Hives, Wheals, and Urticaria in Horses . DrO |
