I did a internet search for this and it has brought me here. I was reading a post from 2009 about a donkey with the outside layer of the hoof peeling off. https://www.horseadvice.com/horse/messages/4/312218.html that had the same simtoms as mine does. I have joined this discussion site to see if anyone else has experenced this problem or has any advice for me. I will get some pictures ASAP but it looks alot like the pictures in the post above. They said this was caused by black walnut trees in the pasture which I have several of, and if its true I will get them removed. Thanks for any help on this

Welcome Cliff, Actually the lameness may have been caused by the black walnut but not the peeling away of the outer layers of horn. The rest of the posts are helpful and I look forward to your images. DrO

This mule dosn't have any lameness but the horn is peeling on several of the feet. I will get the pictures later today and post them. This mule has had bad feet since I got her. She has broken down heels and are really odd shaped.

It does look similar to the earlier post you reference above and may be a infection of the outermost horn overlying the deeper horn. I would consider treating this like recommended in the article on white line disease Cliff. DrO
