If I understand FM to be a mechanical lameness, is there typically no involvement of the SI joint?
My friend's mare has FM of the left hind, has the typical string-halty gait, but no slapping down. This mare in trot does exhibit uneven movement of the pelvis, lifting the left side higher than the right. Would this type of movement cause pain or unstability over time? The mare is not cantered currently, mainly walked with a bit of trot.

Hello PJ,
FM does not typically involve the SI and neither is the gait similar to Stringhalt. They are two very different appearing diseases and in the chronic phase not typically painful. Compare the descriptions in the FM article and the Stringhalt article to see what I mean.
