Sunday 5/28 During a Mounted shooting event over the weekend my husbands horse tripped going around a barrel and cut his front left cannon bone on the out side(lateral?) with his rear hoof and possibly a nail on the shoe. It was bleeding pretty good and the laceration is about 1 1/2 - 2 inches long. We hosed it off and put Wonder Dust on it and bandaged it. It was a little swollen above the bandage so we left that off last night. Now that I have read the article I want to get the Wonder Dust off and use Nitrofurazone. As of this morning the wound was seeping a little bit. Do I need to get the Wonder Dust off before using the Nitrofurazone? Or can I cold hose it tonight and put the ointment on top and let the Wonder Dust wear off on its own?

Hello Kathy, Wonder Dust should not be put on a fresh wound because of the several caustic ingredients that can hurt healthy tissues. You should immediately rinse it off with the hose. Not being able to examine the wound I cannot recommend specific treatment and recommend you get veterinary help considering the use of the caustic substance on a fresh wound. You can find general principles at HorseAdvice.com » Diseases of Horses » Skin Diseases, Wounds, and Swellings » Wounds / Burns » Long Term Deep Wound Care. DrO

Dr. O. My husband and I are having a hard time getting the bandage to stay on and not slide down his leg ending up around his pastern. I just read the article on bandaging the lower leg and it sounds like we'd have to run the bandage from the heel up to his knee. My vet has recommended Aluspray. I have that on now but not sure that will stay on either, will check when I bring him in tonight. We just purchased the Professionals Choice Ventech Elite SMB's for events. I saw in the bandaging article these can be used as a bandage. Did I read that right? How would that work? Put the chlorhexidine cream on, then tefla pad, then vet wrap, then SMB?

Hello Kathy, it really depends on your objectives for bandaging, if control of swelling, maintaining tissue apposition, and treatment application are your goals then I would : crème, telfa, roll cotton, cotton gauze, SMB to hold it all in place. The cotton is much cheaper than vet wrap. DrO
