One of our offspring who is living off site had a cough, experienced choke, and a few hours later was ultrasounded and had abscesses in her lungs. Although she is better now, tracheal wash culture just confirmed 3 pathogens yesterday, including bordatella. How contagious is this to other horses? What disinfectant kills this? She currently resides next door to us at a training facility. We have another horse in training next door too. Since this is primarily a kennel problem in dogs, how worrisome is this in horses? Any help would be appreciated.

Hello Judy, Though often isolated from horses in association with respiratory disease, and rarely in reproductive diseases, its role in the cause of disease is still debated. From this we can infer that the organism appears to move easily from horse to horse (coughs and sneezes) but the lack of confirmed cases of outbreaks suggest that at best this is a weak pathogen of horses. It should be susceptible to quaternary ammonium disinfectants and that most products mention the organism and the recommended dilution for effective killing of the organism. DrO
