Hi Dr. O; There has been a lot of discussion around training in cold weather lately. Here is a link to a post of a veterinarian on Facebook, along with the research that was used, to give the guideline of not exerting below 20F.... This is a little curious to me as a Canadian! What are your views on this? https://www.facebook.com/YatesEquine/posts/1445433308887421

Hello clauee, While these research findings are interesting and teach caution when exercising in the cold, it is a fact that many horses are exercised in the cold with no observable harm. I don't doubt the findings but what is not known is how significant these findings are. Assuming the horse is well adapted to the work and climate and in good health I believe horses can be safely exercised in the cold but have no feel for how much is too much and how cold is too cold. I take away from the papers that you should monitor your horses respiratory system perhaps by starting to note respiratory rate and character before and after exercise. Increases in recovery time to pre-exercise respiratory character over time could be a early indicator of a worsening condition. DrO
