Posted on Monday, Jul 25, 2005 - 8:08 am: Electrolytes once a week, orally.2 years recovering from EPM, 3 years dealing with COPD. Began allergy shot regimen this year, still working on 3rd vial. Urine this morning was discolored, I ran in not thinking to grab something to catch it, so I only ran my hand in to get a visual on the color.....which was a VERY DARK BROWN......havn't seen an article related to the color described. Called Vet, she asked if there was any exertion, or bark eating observed...answer NO. Water intake has been slightly lower than normal. Vet said to offer plain water and water with electrolytes to give a choice. CBCs taken last week, showed dehydration as well. Will grab a sample in the morning for first urine and have tested. Any ideas.......suggestions???? Thanking you in advance for your attention and assistance. Sincerely, VLR |

What were the CBC results and most importantly how does the horse feel? DrO |

Posted on Tuesday, Jul 26, 2005 - 5:40 pm: Thank you for your response, DrO......I am relieved somewhat that you have stated ...normal Confused on your site direction....Jet's coat is beautiful. No itching or rubbing or any irritations for that matter, visual or otherwise. However.......Jet is NOT feeling well at all, and I am thinking I should let him go on. He is miserable, and I am feeling guilty for trying to fix him. Selfish in that I would be happy to have him for another 21 years, IF only to be able to look at him........... The breathing is very difficult for him and he is off his feed and hay for day 2 now, and only taking the water that I put into his mouth............. I truly appreciate your making yourself and your research available to us. Your site helped me get him into recovery regarding the EPM....but, I think the allergies and COPD are not going to allow me to fix him. Warmest regards.......VL |

I don't understand why you are loosing the battle with COPD Vikki this is a condition that is often very managable: what type of allergy shots are you giving and have you reviewed the COPD article?DrO |

Posted on Thursday, Mar 23, 2006 - 11:17 am: have had computer problems and have wanted desperately to give you, DR.O.........an update!!!! and a VERY VERY VERY BIG and SINCERE HUG!!!!!!!!!!!AFTER having recvd. your response....(I don't understand why you are loosing the battle with COPD Vikki this is a condition that is often very manageable)..........and Jet's failing...............I immediately phoned in another VET////blood work was taken looking for infections due to the history I had provided....Negative!!!! I phoned in another VET.........same results, Negative...........Phoned in yet another VET on Sunday, and this VET was familiar with Jet's case/records and had reviewed the results of the 2nd blood draw..and gave me Doxycycline Hyclate Tablets to give 2X/day.........The next evening another VET was called in and he gave Dexamcthason intravenously and left us with directions for administering for the next 3 days....then a follow up............ On day 3....I phoned in his regular VET......VERY WORRIED, because to date Jet was NOT showing ANY sings of improvement. My days were spent in 12 hour shifts shared with my husband.........that Saturday the VET said that Jet needed to go to the equine hospital in Lessburg for further attention.........stating he would not make it through the night!!!!!!!! I must note here that because of the cost the Vet stated that it would take to possibly extend Jet's life maybe 6 months.....My husband was making the decision to humanely put Jet down ..............we had to take out a loan, for Jet's care. It was your words and my knowing Jet for 21 years that brought us to the decision to financially try and support Jet. After a 7 hour trailer ride...that would have normally taken 3 hours........Jet was received in as good a shape as could be expected. We stopped EVERY 20 to 40 minutes.....as I was riding with Jet......and taking his temp the entire way....We rigged a sling just incase Jet was unable to stand on his own...wrapped his legs to give him support .....and when his temp would rise to over 101...we stopped, administered water orally, offered carrots and hosed his legs, ect...to reduce the temp..... Then would travel on ...VERY slowly so to not stress Jet out. As I stated earlier....Jet arrived bright eyed and weak...but able to walk on into the hospital and under went further treatment, xrays, exams and such. The last thing they did was to do a trachea wash, to check for bacteria and infection, put him in ICU with 4 lines of fluid and 2 lines of oxygen. We left the hospital after 1AM the next morning...with the thought that Jet would NOT be coming home. There was NOT much hope given to us. We arrived back to the hospital at 11AM the same day to find Jet happy, happy, happy!!!!!!! I took out the hospitals bedding and replaced it with our (cardboard) bedding...which I will add the hospital NOW uses in their ICU unit for their severe respiratory cases!!!!! As Jet was already on the AeroMask 3/X/daily he was an old pro at the nebulizer!!! The staff fell in love with him because Jet was done with his treatment in 15 or 20 minutes compared to ALL their other horses that took the normal 45 to 1 hour time for treatment...........Jet came into the hospital weighing only 835 lbs........and left at 990!!!!...they said that Jet had lived as long as he had because of the great amount of muscle mass he had prior to the beginning of the weight loss.......and we would have had him in sooner had he NOT been receiving the great care!! Based on ALL Jet's records that I provided the hospital...Jet had been fighting with ALL the infections for 3 years!!!!!! It took them 5 days to culture ALL the bugs Jet had, to find the least amount of treatment that would be needed to kill off all.......they found 5 separate bugs!!!!!!!! Jet although he was being treated for infection and was found through the blood tests to be negative after treatment, apparently was still fighting infection ALL ALONG....that was undetected!!!!! Long story coming to an end...Jet stayed in ICU for 15 days and in the outside barn for another 6 days and came home!!!!! within 4 weeks Jet's weight was increasing enough to atleast cover his bones and after another month was back to almost normal weight!!!! (1405) Handwalking to start and slowly was worked back up to riding ability!! The Hospital asked us if they could use Jet's case and we allowed that as a VERY small gift for such MIRACULOUS improvement in my VERY special friend!!!! Although they did not see anything in Jet's future beyond living out his years as a pet......... ...they still refer to him as the MIRACLE HORSE!!!!! In any event............DR.O,.,,,it was your comment that made me SO tenacious!!!! Because of YOU, DR. O I still have my friend! Because of YOU, DR. O Jet will live on... So, in closing I simply want to say THANK YOU and to let you KNOW that BECAUSE of YOU there is one more wonderful equine life that has been.... SAVED Thank you will for me NEVER be enough...but I PRAY that some how I have been able to express in JUST words my gratitude and MOST sincere thanks for your words of encouragement!!!! I Continue to KEEP You and Yours in our Prayers.. Warmest wishes and thanks to you Dr.O........ Vikki & JET} week 1 after arriving home week 6 after arriving home |

Posted on Thursday, Mar 23, 2006 - 4:07 pm: Oh, Vikki, what a heartstopping story. How confusing it all sounds. Your perseverence was beyond amazing . . . if you hadn't persevered and followed your gut, Jet wouldn't be with you today. Thanks for the very happy update. How long has it been now since Jet's recovery? |

Posted on Thursday, Mar 23, 2006 - 9:59 pm: Vikki, you must be sooo thrilled.I am so happy for you. I am curious, what did the vet hospital do differently to identify the bugs that were ravaging Jet? Your local vets did 3 tests previously that showed nothing. Shelley |

Posted on Friday, Mar 24, 2006 - 8:21 am: Thank you Vicki for the kudo's and looking at my response last year I must say few have done so much with so little. It does not seem like I did anything more than put a bug in your ear, but I am delighted with the results.I too am interested in pursuing the diagnosis a bit if you don't mind. First was a fever ever detected during all those early exams? Did Leesburg ever label the infection (like pneumonia, pleuropneumonia, etc..)? Like Lee I am interested in what was cultured and how the culture was taken and the antibiotics used. I would think most of this information should be on your discharge form and this may help someone else recognize a problem earlier. DrO |
