Dr. O, We have a month old filly who has had rapid breathing for several weeks. She's had a slight fever on and off. The vet has put her on 2 different antibiotics and there's no change. Her blood work came out close to normal. She appears to be more active in the evenings or on cooler days. Her first week she nursed constantly but does not seem to nurse for very long now. She's eating a little mare and foal, nibbling on alfatha and grass. The mare has loads of milk, squirting out. She's getting a little ribby now and not as active. The vet thinks it may be a condition where she can't regulate her body temp. Anything on this condition or any other thoughts on this?
Thanks, Cece

Hmmm...it is tough for neonates to regulate temperature under some conditions. Is she perfectly normal when the temperatures moderate? An important test would seem to be is the temperature elevated during times of heat stress and normal when not. Does the fever follow this pattern? A thorough investigation of the respiratory track would include radiographs to help rule out chronic pneumonic conditions like Rhodococcus.
