Hi I tried findin som info in the article about this but nothing seemed to click. I just noticed after brushing my 22-23 yr old mare that on her butocks the hair was just peeling off her skin! I can litteraly grab some hair and it just peels off! It's also verry dry and course, she hs a large lump right under her throat but the vet checked her thyroid level last year and it was normal, he will be coming out again in september but just wanted to know if anyone else has experienced such a strange problem?

Jenniffer, Is her hair long all ready? You said you can grab it, and that makes me think of winter length hair. If her summer coat IS long, it makes me think that she could have Cushing's Disease. When the hair comes off, is there just bare skin underneath, or can you see tiny new hair growing on the skin? If the skin is dry and flaky, not weepy, then I don't think it is rain rot. She might just be shedding out for her winter coat . . . and because of her age, she might not shed out in the same pattern as a younger horse would do.

No Holly, Her hair is still short and yes it is just bare skin underneath, doesnt look infected just bare skin as if you had shaved it that way and its in like a splotchy patern. when i said grab it I mean just with my finger tips. there doesnt look to be any new growth on the bare spos either. very puzzling!!

With healthy skin underneath Jennifer this may be early hair loss in preparation for the winter coat coming in. Some horses just get a little ahead of themselves. DrO
