My two year old Warmblood filly has small holes or indents/craters in her coronet bands. Each hole is less than 1/16 diameter and there are a max of 8-10 of these holes/indents on the coronet of three of her hooves. What are these? Is it a fungus or infection? I am not sure if this is related, but it has been VERY wet lately & her coronet bands are very moist. Any ideas on how I should treat the hooves? Thanks in advance for any help anyone can provide.

How deep are they? Is there discoloration? Could she be lying down where there are rocks? Her hooves are probably pretty soft with all the moisture and wet grass. Maybe they are indentations from rocks or pebbles? There are some good hoof products on the market that will seal water in/out. Maybe painting one of these on her hooves each day for awhile would allow them to dry out a little and harden up. Of course, where I live, we often have the opposite problem of hooves too dry.

Amy, if it's been very wet, my guess is that the skin of the coronet is just swelling, puckering and sloughing off . . . like ours would if we stayed in the bathtub too long. It may be that Sara's suggestion of water sealant product would help remedy the situation. Are you able to post a photo for us?

Thank you Sara & Holly. The indents are very uniform...looks like worm holes in an apple! I think they are shallow though...not sure exact depth. I will check that out in the morning (Sunday). I will get a picture while I am out on Sunday too. Hopefully I will be able to post it by Sunday evening so ya'll can see what I am talking about. It is just the oddest... I have never seen anything like it. Until then...any other thoughts, suggestions or advice will be appreciated.

Do post the pictures Amy so we can double check but I suspect you are seeing defects of the very outer most part of the horn formed at the corium. This is very common during very wet conditions and you will find occasional posts asking about this. Since the hoof grows out without any defects afterward, I think this may represent the periople in its earliest stages before it dries and becomes a very thin outer membrane. It does suggest that you may want to use hoof wall protectant that protects against excess moisture absorption. For recommendations on this and other ideas on taking care of feet in wet conditions see, Care for Horses » Hoof Care » Care of the Hoof: an Overview. Be sure to review the posts on hoof supplements in that topic. DrO
