Hi, our 6 year old gelding began limping last week which appears to be in the stifle region..possibly a pulled muscle our vet believes. Along with that, the pastern is stocked up - I assumed from non-use. It's been about 8 days and he has improved just by allowing him time to heal on pasture with his buddies. He is putting weight on it and you have to look really close to see any limp or skip in his walk. He even trots and canters on occasion without a problem. However, the pastern is still stocked up. Is this unusual? I am assuming that with the exercise this should be reduced. There is no heat. Any idea how long it normally takes before seeing any improvement?

DC, is the stocking up in the same leg as the pulled muscle? If so, I would wonder if the swelling is truly stocking up. Twice, in the past year, my mare has had to be stall rested for different injuries. Both times, she stocked up, but as soon as she returned to walking or turn out, the stocking up disappeared almost immediately. You could almost see it diminish as she moved. Hope your horse returns to complete soundness.

Well, we don't for absolute sure know it is in the stifle but the vet felt with the heat in the joint and how he was moving that this was the problem area. When he wasn't moving on it, the swelling in the pastern seemed clearly to be from non-use as there was no heat at all. He said to give it a few days and see how he progresses. I wasn't ready to do elaborate tests and xrays at that point. Our vet makes trips to our area every 2 weeks - so next Wed. he will stop if I need him to. I did think it was strange that inspite of his improved movement that the pastern is not showing much improvement.

And yes Fran - the stocking up is the same leg.

DC, I recently had a similar experience with my gelding. He's on stall rest with hand walking, and after a tempertantrum while left alone for 5 minutes tied to the trailer, kicking out fully and repeatedly with both back feet the entire time, he came up markedly lame in the left hind. Within 2 days, both hinds were stocked up, the right being much more so. It was the most stubborn case I've ever had, and with an hour of handwalking, nightly mineral ice and standing bandages, he barely showed improvement. It took about 2 weeks for it to disappear. So I have no help, just a similar problem that did resolve itself

If it does not resolve by the time the vet is back out I would have it examined, but I would be sure the foot is thoroughly examined with knife and testers and the area where the swelling is. DrO
