Hello,
I have a 1 yr. old colt that has been shown in halter. I've had him since January 05. Starting in February, his front right felt lock started "ticking". I backed off of working him and just gave him pasture time. Here it is September and now his hocks sound like they are ticking also.
Right now, I'm feeding him 5 pounds of grain/oat mixture with Futurity + Ester C, 1/2 of soy oil, w/ 1 flake alfalfa and 1 flake grass hay. At this time, he stays in the pasture 24/7. When the weather start getting bad, I'll stall him at night.
He doesn't seem lame at all, it just ticks. I think it bugs me more than it does him. I just don't want to hurt him by working him. I've round penned him some. If I lounge him the circle is so big we are using up space of 200 ft. Today, I ponied him in a straight line back and forth for about 20 minutes.
His previous owner had him on in addition to what I'm feeding now.. Red Cell, 1 cup rice bran, probiotics. I was worried about overdosing him on iron with the red cell so I cut down. I worry about over working and over feeding young horses.
I like the Futurity w/Ester C because it has glucosamine (spelling?) already in it for joints.
you can view him at: https://aplusmobilemusic.photosite.com/MIMoonBabe/
I think he's lost some weight since I got him and some muscle mass, but he's a baby and I don't mind for now really.
So any suggestions?
Thanks in advance,
Kim

This is a often discussed subject Kimberly, run a search on "joint clicking" in the discussion search engine. However the bottom line is that the colt is OK and you are not doing anything wrong. For explanations see your search results.
