Hi:

My 9 year old arabian gelding may need to undergo surgery to cut the pastern annular ligament. Last week, the vet injected his tendon sheath. The hope is that the swelling will subside. However, if it returns with increased work, he will need the surgery. I understand that about 70% of horses are able to return to full performance.

Two questions: #1: How long does it take for a horse to recover from this surgery:

#2: What is considered "full performance".

Thanks very much,

Barbara

Hello Barbara,
1) There are actually several different ways to do this surgery and they differ in recovery time so this is a question best asked of the surgeon.
2) Usually this is meant to be the level of performance before the horse developed the problem.

We have an article on this topic and you will find it at, Equine Diseases » Lameness » Diseases of the Lower Limb » Annular Ligament Constriction.
