I took in some evacuated horses from Hurricane Rita. One of them has a large sarcoid on his should just under his neck. It's very large and angry looking. He has a new one on his chest and and new one on his shoulder blade. They are all open, angry and weeping. The owners had the large one removed and it came back. My question is, the horse has a hole in his shoulder between the two lower wounds. It looks like a bullet hole and has had a large amount of foul smelling puss draining from it. They had the horse on PCN for 7 days and he's been off of it for about a week now. The wound has a horrid smell. The puss looks like fibrous material and chunks too. The owner is leaving the horse here for a week. They said if I could think of anything else to do for this horse, they'd appreciate it. Can the horse be put back on PCN? I bought some 30cc syringes and want to start flushing it tomorrow. It appears to be very deep and tunneling. This horse really needs help. He is affected with these on his left side but not his right. He is even blind in his left eye. I'd be happy to post some pics of the sarcoids and the wound.
Oh, right now, they have all of the spots coated with the purple dab on stuff. I don't know what it is. I thought I'd gently rinse that off tomorrow.

Purple Gentian that is in "blue lotion" is probably what is on there. It can provide a good protective layer, especially during hot, humid weather. It helps wounds to heal and dry up. For something as large as it sounds like you are dealing with, Scarlet oil might be a better choice after cleaning. I would expect those wounds need to be cleaned and thoroughly flushed twice daily, maybe with a nolvasaan solution. Perhaps some alu-shield could help protect in between cleanings God love you for helping this horse -- wish I was there to give you a hand! There are likely some very good articles about wound care on this site.

Bless you for your effort but once you saw the horses had possible infectious disease problems, I would have reconsidered the options unless you have no horses at risk. First, be aware there are other possibilities than sarcoids and some of these can be infectious. Be sure to keep these horses and their drainage away from your horses. For a list of differentials check out the fibroblastic sarcoid subtopic in the sarcoid list.

I would get the local veterinarians involved and have at least a visual exam and possibly a cytology and culture. Do these horses have a negative Coggins as this area of the country has a much higher incidence of EIA?

Yes the horse can be returned to penicillin but oral TMP/SMZ tablets might be a better first choice. I would avoid gentian or methyl violet because they are caustic substances and these wounds should be treated like our recommendations in long term wound care, for more see Equine Diseases » Skin Diseases » Wounds / Burns » Long Term Deep Wound Care.
