Dr. O, and all, where can i find more information on this part of founder? The horse has foundered after an infection to the coffin bone. Surgery was done to flush out any infection which was successful. and then founder happened 2 weeks later. There is no rotation, it just sank. thanks, joj

Sinking is not a special type of founder just a severe form of regular founder joj. In rotation the laminae at the distal end of the toe let go first but in sinking the laminae are all letting go simultaneously. Sinkers have a worse prognosis than those that rotate because more laminae are failing and the article on founder still applies in all its parts. DrO

My pony mare has been on 3 mg of Permax since 1996.In February my pharmacist said we should try the generic. She has been ok, but foundered in spring. She is now 27 yrs old and her most recent laminitic attack (I have only been forced to retire her these past 3 years) is the worst. Since an August 1 Xray she has gone from 5 degree rotation in RF to 15. The vet is concerned about eventual sinking, He wants me to switch to what he has had success with for Cushings--the pergolide liquid. He said usual dosage is 1ml equal to 1 mg_ so was surprised when I told him she was on 3mg. I am confused. The Permax saved her life when she had lost 300lbs with muscle mass, drinking huge water etc.

I am sorry to hear this Joan. It is fact that pituitary adenoma is a progressive disease in spite of pergolide therapy and that horses need increasing doses. So the question is the generic as potent as the non-generic or did the horse simply grow out of the 3 mg dosage. Considering the seriousness of the current position, why not add the 1 mg. liquid to the current regimen and see if the horse can be returned to soundness and if so then slowly experiment with substituting back in the generic to see if symptoms return. Be sure to review the article on Cushings to review the effects of overdosage of pergolide. DrO
