Posted on Wednesday, Oct 27, 1999 - 8:08 pm: DrO-FUNGIDYE for white line disease works. I have been applying daily for a week now and the crumbly, grainyness has definitely decreased. My farrier instructed me to use a hoof knife and scrape the areas prior to application. The pits are no deeper and I'm relieved to see the positive effect. Also a + it's insoluable in water or urine! FYI- the active ingredients are: Chemotherapeutic agents, Organic trypanocide dyes, Acrilavine HCL, Gentian violet. available from The Horse Shoe Barn about $15 for 4oz. www.horseshoebarn.com thanx, anita |

Posted on Thursday, Oct 28, 1999 - 7:33 am: Hello Anita,I find just about any good strong antimicrobial works if the white line disease is all pared away and healthy tissue exposed. I like formaldehyde and have never found it to fail. The ingredients in the Fungidye are commonly found antimicrobials, usually in cattle wound products, but they are really too tissue toxic to be put on exposed tissues. This is not a problem with white line disease as only horn will come into contact with it. Both gentian violet and acriflavine are soluable in water (in the 60's we used them as treatments for aquarium fish in a very dilute form). They do stain however so persist where you put them. Do not make a mistake and try and treat this disease at the bottom of a hole: the real secret to this disaese is to pare out all unhealthy horn prior to treating. DrO |

Posted on Tuesday, Nov 9, 1999 - 9:57 am: I have a friend who has a horse that had white line so bad they were told to put him down, but they have worked for about a year on this and recently they have used a product called clean trax and it has worked wonderful. Before the clean trax they were using Thrush Buster. In the beginning they had to remove most of the hoof.Their vet has been there at least every 4 weeks with the farrier to clean and trim away all affected areas. He now has almost completely regrown and is being ridden. |

Posted on Tuesday, Nov 9, 1999 - 7:37 pm: jamesina,Thrush Buster is not intended for white line, so it doesn't surprise me they had no luck with it. It does work very well for thrush, however!!! My mare's white line is 90% cleared up after these 3 weeks of treatment with the Fungidye. She had it on all 4 and has a minor spot on on hoof left. At my farrier's suggestion, she's been kept barefoot which makes thorough cleaning possible while not giving the fungus any place to hide and grow. Thanx- |
