Last year I bought a beautiful small WB mare with a super temperament. She was 7 then and had had two foals. Cutting a long story short, she has quite severe kissing spine (3 sets of impingements and sclerosis). She has had two lots of steroid injections between affected vertebrae, mesotherapy, physio and osteopathy. She cannot be ridden and is turned out in the field with a companion and reasonably happy although needs a lot of food to keep weight on. I give her with Cosequin. Question is, is she likely to be in discomfort in the field? Should I give her pain relief? Is the condition likely to get worse with age? I would very much like to keep her as she is a very lovely horse, but is it fair to her. As she is not ridden, how will I know if she is in pain?
