Yesterday, while my gelding was having his teeth floated, my vet made a comment about the fissures on my horse's tongue. Of course I asked what would cause his tongue to look like this. We reviewed his diet; Alfalfa cubes Beet pulp Patriot Surmount 12 supplement (Energy Source) Biotin supplement Salt and Mineral Block Water The free choice salt and mineral block came as a likely culprit for this symptom. He was recently taken off pasture about 2 weeks ago so I am assuming he is using the salt block again for chewing. Any suggestions or ideas? Thanks Susan B.

I have seen what appear as crevasses criss-crossing the tongue that did not look like old injuries. That is, they did not appear like depressed yet thickened up scars. Fissures would be an apt description. There random appearance did not suggest normal structures the horse was born with but I can not account for their cause. However I never associated them with problems either. DrO

Hmmmm.....OK? Your description is what I am seeing. It is not often that we can get into my geldings mouth and do an inspection. Make him say ahhhhhh! I know in humans that crevices or fissures in the tongue could be indicative of nutrition imbalances or disease processes . Perhaps I shall have the salt block taken away and feed the salt, minerals in his food rations instead. It would be difficult to inspect all the horses that are on cubed diets to see if this is a common denominator. Thanks Dr.O

What diseases would cause such changes in a humans tongue Susan? Perhaps your changes are different than what I am seeing for there does not appear to be any active disease process nor clinical signs. DrO
