I have an 11 yr old TB gelding, 17.3hands that has an irregularity in the hind left. OSU vets ruled out EPM, and a variety of other issues; called it stringhalt. He has a developmental bone chip in the left hock (same leg that stringhalts). In the 4 yrs I have owned him, his movement improved such that the irregularity was not visible. After a massage therapist "worked" on him, in Feb 05, he has been very irregular. Annual radiographs do not show changes in the hock. We event BN/N level. He is on Equinyl CM, Finishline Iron Horse, Daily pelleted wormer, Vitamin E, Oil. He is a very hard keeper. THe oil, & vitamin E is my attempt to help him neurologically. He was started on Adequan 2 months ago. He developed a bog spavin in the left hock on 10/2. QUESTION: Could the supplements be aggravating the OCD? }

Hi Halladay....Not sure if this has anything to do with your situation, but I have a horse (3 yr old) with stringhalt. She has been on Adequan for over a year now. Have been told recently that her middle hock joint is fusing and that the Adequan while it keeps her lubricated, slows down the fusing process. Now I am not sure if she even has stringhalt or if the hock has been causing the symptions she shows. Respectfully, Nancy

Welcome Halladay, What is in the Finishline? The other supplements should not be a problem. The bog spavin may be from strained joint capsule do to the stringhalt like movements. For more on Stringhalt you can see, Equine Diseases » Lameness » Diseases of the Upper Rear Limb » Stringhalt. DrO

Dear Dr Oglesby, Finishline Ironhorse is a liquid vitamin supplement that I add to my geldings grain at night. Sully-his hock xrays do not indicate fusing is going on. I have read the article on stringhalt and will look at it again. Thank you Halladay

As long as it just contains vitamins in recommended amounts, I don't see how that might worsen the OCD. DrO

This is really interesting. Tony my 17hh shire x TB had stringhalt which while working did not affect at all. It was only noticeable during relax walk at times. Of course I am going back 12 years back in the UK, at the time vets said it was quite common on the big horses specially shire horses. They had no clue what caused it then and was pretty harmless not considered a flaw when showing. I would love to see how this thread will develop.

Liliana, My TB was only "presenting" the stringhalt when not undersaddle - similar to your experience of it being noticeable during relaxed walks. He fell in the pasture in January 2006; flipped over from right to left. Then he got cast in his stall and the same stringhalt leg blew up the size of a small basketball in April 2006. Now we are almost back to the December 2005 stringhalt.
