Dr. O, 1 horse has not left the farm but 1 time in 3 years and that was about 1 year ago. 2 other horses on the same farm haven't left in 3 years. 1 horse is on the road allot. 3 of the horses never showed any signs of anything. The horse that has a swelling under the jaw between the throat latch and end of the jaw has had no fever, not quit eating but was not vaccinated for the strangles like the other 3. I put him on 20 cc's of penicillen because he was snotting somewhat but it was clear. I put 2 and 2 together and contacted my vet because it became very hard. They said they couldn't do anything till it ruptured. I separated him from the rest of the herd and started putting heat packs on the area. It has in the last day, gone down in size and not been as hard. He's off his feed now from the stress of being away from the herd and constantly paces and sweats. We have a cold front coming in shortly and I am concerned with the fact he might get worse from standing in the cold. Should I go ahead and put him in the barn and just keep the other horses away from his stall? Could it have been a bite from some insect and not the strangles? Thank you for your time.

Welcome Linda, Submandibular lymphadenopathy is pretty common and not always caused by Strangles. Other bacteria and viruses are possible but I don't think insect bites are likely. You can try a course of penicillin, be sure you give adequate doses (both amount and frequency) and for the proper dose see Equine Medications and Nutraceuticals » Antibiotics and Antimicrobials » Penicillin. Otherwise I like the heat packs and yes I think you need to reduce his stress levels while not exposing the others. Not knowing your barn situation it is hard to make specific recommendations. DrO
