Discussion on Chip fracture of coffin bone | |

Posted on Thursday, Jan 6, 2000 - 7:06 am: I just joined ten minutes ago and this is my very first posting! First off, I want to say I think this site is terrific and am delighted to be a member. Looking forward to my visits here on a daily basis! My concern is this: Yesterday my trainer's top eventing mare was diagnosed with a chip fracture of the tip of the coffin bone. Needless to say we're all pretty upset. She's being treated by a world-class vet, and they are putting her on the "fast track" so she may possibly get some competing in in Florida in a month or two--10 days of stall rest, followed by electromagnetic therapy, etc, static magnets on the hoof, etc. I don't know all the details. I guess my question is twofold: What's the general prognosis in cases like this? I always thought coffin bone problems spelled doom. Also, not that she is my horse, but the "fast-track" approach kind of gives me chills--is there any justification for doing intense, short-term therapies as opposed to say a year off at pasture in terms of true healing? As I said, it's not my mare, and not my business to make decisions, but I do have two horses in training at this barn and would like to be able to make informed and humane choices if such a thing ever were to happen to mine. Thanks for your help! |
