Discussion on What are signs that a squamous cell tumor has metastasized? | |
Author | Message |
Posted on Monday, Jan 17, 2000 - 7:34 pm: My 10 year old TB has been recently diagnosed with a squamous cell tumor on his left hind fetlock. We speculate that it started from a small wound. Due to its location, the vet recommended that I not have the tumor fully excised. We have started treated it with fluorouracil cream. What signs do I look for to determine whether or not the cream is working? What can be done to determine whether or not the cancer has metastasized? He is full of energy; eats normally; has normal body functions; and is sound.Barbara |

You could biopsy regional lymph nodes as a early indication of whether to expect further problems. As to whether the creme is working that too can be a difficult call. The problem is the cream will probably prevent the skin from healing. 5-FU creme works by interfering with cell synthesis and can effect normal cell duplication and growth. So you may have to rebiopsy the area to know if it has disappeared. DrO |

He was seen by a vet for a bump that resembled cauliflower at the very back of his sheath. The vet didn't culture it or call it by name but was convinced by the feel of it that it was cancer (my guy wouldn't DrOp for him even after 2 shots of 3cc each of ace). He reccommended we mix Fluorouracil, Neosporin, and HyDrOcortisone 10 with 1/2 tube of Zimecerin. I cleaned him everyday for 1 week with Ivory liquid, rinsed very well, coated the inside of the sheath with k-y Jelly and then coated the inside of the sheath and up inside all around the penis with the Fluorouracil mixture. After that the treatment continued twice a week. I see no change, in fact it has increased in size and he's very uncomfortable when he has to try and squeeze past this thing to DrOp. What do you think? We weren't offered any other options but to remove his penis. Sometimes as a laymen I don't know what to think about information I hear coming from vets (don't mean to be critical, but I guess I expect to hear something different).I will be very interested in your comments and especially anything that you may offer that will futher help my guy. Thanks! |
