For a couple months now my 23 yr old pony has had a snotty nose. Thought it was a head cold as my other gelding also had a snotty nose. Well about 2 weeks ago on a very humid hot day in TX, my pony was breathing very hard at a stand still in the pasture. Took him to the Vet, he said he has COPD. They did run a white blood cell count to rule out infection. Said his lungs sounded clear. We were given prenisolone and Tri-hist for the next couple days until the Vets office could get me Ventipulmin. But after a day of the Pred. and Tri-Hist my pony was fine, breathing normal. He never had a cough, just breathing hard and a snotty nose. He is still doing fine, is on no medication, he is breathing normal, no coughing etc. The only thing is he still has a snotty nose. Everyday there is thick clear to milky colored snot. And when he puts his head down to eat, I can hear him breathing. Sounds congested but I assume its him breathing through the snot, like we humans sound like when we have a snotty nose. But there is not a huge amount of snot in his nostrils that it would interfere with his breathing. So I assume its further us in his sinuses. The snot has no oder and has never been yellow or green. So could his snotty nose be related to his COPD?? Is there anything I can give him to clear his sinuses???

I don't think the snotty nose and COPD are related Lori. There is not a general treatment for the snotty nose and the cause needs to identified and addressed. Since this problem is several months long, I think you need to have the veterinarian specifically look at the snotty nose as a problem. DrO

Thanks Dr. O!! I have him an appt. next week with another Vet. But if its not an infection(WBC was clear, and snot has no oder)what could be causing it?? In all that I have been reading the past couple years I have never stumbled upon anything that resembles what Rusty has. Thanks for your time

Neither odor nor blood work may reveal the cause. If it is truly snot (WBC combined with mucous and serous discharge) Cytology of the exudate and then finding its source is the only way to be sure of the cause. If the physical exam does not determine a likely cause endoscopy is the next step. DrO
