Dear Dr. O. I have a 5 month old miniature colt who after travelling to Washington from Colorado has developed a sporadic dry cough. No temp, lungs clear, good appetite and energy. We are quite a bit damper here than to what he's accustomed. His stall is dry, he's blanketed at night and we use low dust white shavings for bedding. He gets good quality grass hay, and 1/2 lb Mare/Foal grain mixture and 1/2 lb. alfalfa pellets a.m and p.m. per the breeder's instructions. Is this adequate or too much or not enough? Having only large horses in the past, I am going totally on suggestions and the "eye of the master" method. He is the perfect weight for his size but could not afford to lose any. Might it be allergy or immature reflexes? He's also had a bout of locking stifle bi-lateral but seems to have overcome it with a little conditioning and ROM exercises. My other mini colt (twice as old) is healthy, well, as a horse, but carries a bit more baby fat on his ribs. Any suggestions on the cough or when should I start being more than just concerned. As I said earlier, he's not displaying any other symptoms at this time. Thanks for any insights you could provide. Shirley Warnick

Ann Marie, I have moved your question out of Kim's discussion and put it in its own discussion titled, COPD?, Clenbuterol?. Back up one page by selecting Heaves & Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease off the navigation bar at the top of this page and you will see your discussion at the top of the list. Lisa
