Hi Dr. O,
My vet recently told me that if Erlichia is not treated, eventually it will clear up on its own and the horse is usually no worse for the wear.

I couldn't find a reference to such in your article. Is this correct?

Hello Sondra,
your vet is correct and that is the usual course of the disease. That is what is meant in the article when it gives you the prognosis. I will make it clearer that this is even without treatment. However there are occasional exceptions where horses become quite ill or become chronically infected and treatment recommended.
