Posted on Sunday, Dec 4, 2005 - 6:50 pm: the mare is 20 years old, the swelling is not hot, and she didn't mind when I shaved it or touched it. She is not very lame but sometimes takes a misstep. It feels spongy- not soft like liquid, but feels about as hard as a muscle. I have 2 photos --one from the side, where you can see that the bump on the inside of the knee has a definite form to it and looks like a big kneecap. From the front photo, you can see that it expands out to more general swelling on the outside of the leg. It has been like this for at least a week. I just shaved it today. Thanks again for any advice on this. If she was more sore or lame I would be really worried, but I just wonder if its a hematoma or joint fluid and what can be done about it. Someone told me that arthritis bumps cannot really be treated, so ??? -Wendy Hutchens |

It was spongy feeling and he also didn't care if you touched it or how firmly you touched it. He wasn't lame, no pain, no heat, etc. Some days it was more swollen then others but he remained rideable (and was still known for bucking off the occasional adult rider!). His owner and I trailered him to the vet clinic for xrays and needle aspiration. Xrays were negative and they were unable to get any fluid from the swelling. Unfortunatley, he had a seizure from a medicine they gave him to "wake" him up. I forgot the name of it but they did it so we could trailer him back home, and that complication kinda ate up the whole rest of the visit. I do remember having no orders for treatment when we came home. He also had several of the tumors related to grey horses. He lived to a ripe old age of 29! Here's a picture of his knee, again, back from 2000. This was one of the instances where it was at it's biggest: |

A very large extra-articular noninflammatory swelling (these are usually synovial lined tumors) can behave as you state whereas a very small intra-articular swelling associated with osteoarthritis can prevent a horse from being ridden at all. It is important to get a diagnosis so that proper treatment can be instituted.DrO |

It has seemed to go down a little after I shaved it. Was your boarder's horse soft spongy? Tess' is pretty hard-spongy- almost feels like a muscle or something. So I am naturally curious. Thanks again.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |

It didn't roll around-it was definitely attached or originated from the joint. DrO mentions extra-articular noninflammatory swelling and that sounds really, really familiar to what they mentioned Ibn might of had. I wish I could be of more help, but it was long ago! As DrO said, you'll have to get it checked out to know for sure. It looks so similar to Ibn's but it could be so different. Oh, the joy of horses |
